Tattoos and Body Piercings
Tattoos and body piercings evoke images of “thugs” or “punks,” or people who are tough with an attitude. There might be a correlation, but just because you have a tattoo or piercing doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re part of a certain subculture, and vice versa. All sorts of people from different walks of life get tattooed and pierced. The biggest reason is probably because it’s “cool,” even if it sounds superficial. Sometimes tattoos and piercings have a special meaning behind them, but they’re visual modifications of the body and they can’t help but have aesthetic value. Even if they’re covered up with clothing, someone has to see it eventually, right?
Why or why not should you get tattoos and body piercings? Some people like to express themselves through body art, while others refrain for health concerns or religious reasons. Ultimately, it’s your body and it’s your choice. Just be prepared for others who want to have a say in what you do to your body.
But admittedly, thinking about getting a tattoo or a body piercing is a big decision to make, though a tattoo might be a bigger deal since it’s pretty permanent. So it’s wise to think carefully about the prospect—are you sure you want to do this? Don’t forget that there’s money, pain and potential permanency involved. If the answer is yes, then move forward and consider the practicality. Of course, fashion doesn’t care much for function, but it’s a good idea to at least think about the consequences. Remember that aftercare is important so that you don’t get infected. If you’re in a line of work where tattoos and body piercings are inappropriate, then you might want to get them somewhere it won’t be seen easily by others. Also consider how body modifications will affect daily tasks—for example, a tongue piercing might change the way you eat.
Choosing to get a tattoo or piercing doesn’t guarantee that you’ll be happy with it, but getting one doesn’t guarantee health hazards or regret. It depends on how well you think it through and how well you adjust to having it. Tattoos and body piercings have been around forever, so there’s no rush in making a choice, though you might not want to wait until society decides you’re too old for them to be fashionable on you. Then again, who cares what other people think?

My viewpoint on tattoos and body piercing have really changed over the years! Growing up in a very strict family, my parents always considered tattoos a “bad thing!” We were told that only low lives or sailors had them, and that people looked down on those with tattoos.
Well things have changed!! I’m now 52 and my 22 yr. old son is a tattoo artist. I am planning on getting my first tattoo (a butterfly) shortly and plan on also getting a hummingbird after that.
I’ve even convinced my dad who is 78 to get his first tattoo.
And as far as body piercings go… My 17 yr. old daughter has a LOT of piercings. I admit I’m not crazy about it, I think she’s gone too far… But it’s her body and she likes it, at least for now. I’m sure in time, her attitude will change.
